What the symptom is actually telling you
A gas burner needs gas flowing, a spark to light it, and a clean path for both. When one of those is missing, the way it fails tells you which one. Clicking with no flame usually means the spark is fine but gas isn't reaching the port. No clicking at all points at the igniter or the switch under the knob. A flame that lights then dies often means the burner cap is sitting crooked, or the flame sensor is dirty. Pay attention to which burners quit. One dead burner is usually a local problem. All of them at once points at the igniter module or the gas supply.
Start with the cheap stuff: caps, ports, and spills
Most no-light calls come down to food debris. Boil-over from rice or a pot of stew runs into the burner ports and hardens there. Gas can't get out evenly, so it won't catch. Salt air makes it worse, since residue cakes on and holds moisture. Lift the burner cap off a cool stove and look at it. Is it seated flat in its groove? A cap tilted a hair off will keep the flame from spreading. Check the little slots around the burner head for crust or grease. This is the most common cause we find, and looking costs you nothing.
Moisture, humidity, and the clicking that won't stop
After you mop the stovetop, or after a humid stretch, the igniter electrode can stay damp. A wet electrode sparks weakly or clicks nonstop even with the knob off. Island humidity means we see this more here than the mainland does. Give the burner area time to air-dry all the way. Open a window, run the hood fan, leave the caps off for a couple of hours. If clicking continues after everything is bone dry, the ceramic around the electrode may be cracked, or the spark module may be failing. Corrosion at the electrode base is common near the shoreline too. Those parts get replaced, not dried.
Safe checks you can do right now
Turn the stove off first and let everything cool. Confirm other burners light, which tells you gas is reaching the range. Pull the burner caps and heads straight up and look for gunk. Wipe them with a damp cloth, dry them fully, then reseat them square. Clear the little igniter tip with a soft dry brush. If you're on propane, check that the tank valve is fully open and the tank isn't empty. That's the whole list. Don't remove the cooktop, poke at the gas line, or unscrew any panel. If you smell gas at any point, shut the supply if you can reach it safely, get outside, and call your gas utility.
