Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven
If you smell rotten eggs in the kitchen, get the burners off, open a window, and call the gas utility from outside. Do that first and sort out the cause later. Gas smells are one of the few appliance problems where acting comes before understanding. Here's the order to work through in the next few minutes, in plain words.

Do These Things Right Now, In Order
1. Stop what you're doing. Don't flip any switches, on or off. 2. Check the burner knobs. Make sure all of them are fully off, including the oven dial. 3. Open windows and the nearest door. Let the trade winds move air through the room. 4. Get everyone out, including pets, if the smell is strong or getting stronger. 5. From outside, call the gas utility. On Oahu that's Hawaii Gas. They handle leaks any hour. 6. Wait outside until someone tells you it's safe to go back in. Six steps, and none of them need tools.
What Not to Do
Don't light a match or a lighter to "test" anything. Don't run the range hood fan, and leave the light switches and the garbage disposal alone. Leave your phone alone until you're outside. A phone is unlikely to spark trouble, but outside is simply better. Don't try to tighten a gas fitting or move the range to look behind it. Flex connectors on our islands see salt air and humidity, and an old one can crack when you pull on it. Don't spray air freshener to cover the smell. You need to know if it's still there. And don't assume it's nothing because it faded.
When to Leave and When to Shut Things Off
Leave immediately if the smell is strong, if you hear a faint hiss near the stove, if anyone feels dizzy or nauseous or has a headache, or if the smell keeps building after you open windows. If your gas shutoff valve is outside and easy to reach, and you know which one it is, turn it off on your way out. If it's behind the range or in a tight cabinet, skip it. Not worth crawling around. Don't hunt for the electrical panel. Cutting power isn't the goal here. Getting out and getting air moving is. Once you're outside, stay outside.
Utility First, Then Us
The gas utility checks the line coming into your home and the connection at the appliance. That's their lane, and reporting a suspected leak costs nothing. Call them before you call anyone else. Call us after the utility clears the line and points at the appliance itself. That's our lane: a burner that won't light and keeps releasing gas, a stuck oven safety valve, a bad igniter that clicks without catching, a pilot that won't stay lit. Reach us and tell us what the utility found. We're an independent shop, and we repair gas ranges and ovens across the major brands.
Smells That Aren't a Gas Leak
A brief whiff when a burner first lights is normal. Gas flows a second before it catches. A new oven often smells sharp and chemical the first few uses. That's the factory coating burning off. Run the vent and open a window. Burnt-on grease under the burner caps smells bad but isn't dangerous. Same with a spill on the oven floor. A sulfur smell that lingers with everything off is different. That's the one that gets a phone call. On parts: some gas valves and igniters ship in from the mainland, so a repair may wait a few days. We'll tell you straight when we order.
Gas Smell From the Stove or Oven — straight answers
Why does natural gas smell like rotten eggs?
Natural gas and propane have no odor on their own. Utilities add a sulfur-based scent called mercaptan so leaks are easy to notice. That rotten-egg or skunky smell is the warning, working exactly as designed.
Can I still use my oven if the smell went away?
We'd hold off until the gas utility checks it. A smell that comes and goes can mean an intermittent valve or a loose connector. Once the line is cleared, call us for the appliance side.
Does salt air cause gas leaks in ranges?
Salt air and humidity corrode fittings, burner parts, and flex connectors over time, especially in homes near the water. Corrosion doesn't create a leak by itself, but it weakens old hardware. Worth a look during any service visit.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the sound
Call us or fill in the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. Puddle under the washer? Clicking from the fridge? Small details help us load the right parts before we drive out.
- Step 2
We look it over
Our tech opens the machine and tests for the real cause instead of guessing. Salt-eaten terminals and humid control boards hide well. You hear exactly what failed and which repair options make sense.
- Step 3
Fixed or scheduled
Many repairs finish on the same visit with parts off the van. When something has to ship in from the mainland, we tell you straight, order it, and keep you posted until it lands.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for salt airCoastal homes chew through appliances. We check for corroded connectors, rusted brackets, and moisture sitting in control boards, because fixing the symptom means little if salt keeps eating the same part next season.
- Humidity knows-howDamp trade wind air makes dryers work harder and vents clog faster. We clear the airflow path and test moisture sensors, then explain the small habits that keep your laundry room from fighting the weather.
- Straight talk on partsShipping across the Pacific takes time, and we say so up front instead of vanishing. You get realistic timing and a plan for the wait. If a machine isn't worth waiting for, we'll tell you that too.
- Independent and localWe are an independent repair company and we work on all major brands. No sales pitch for a new unit. Neighbors talking to neighbors, in plain words, about the machine sitting in your kitchen right now.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more, as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
