Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating
One burner stays cold. You turn the knob, the light comes on, but the pan never gets hot. Or the element glows for a minute, then quits. It's frustrating when dinner is half made. Here on the islands, salt air and humidity add their own wrinkles to electric cooktops. Let's walk through what that dead element usually means, and what you can safely check yourself.

What a cold element is actually telling you
An electric element is simple. Power comes in, resistance makes heat. When one burner dies and the others work, the problem is almost always local to that burner: the element itself, the connection feeding it, or the switch that controls it. When several burners die at once, think power supply instead. On a coil-style range, the socket the coil plugs into is a common weak point. On a smooth top, the element sits under the glass and you can't see it. Either way, a single dead burner rarely means the whole cooktop is finished. It usually means one part in one circuit gave out.
Cause family one: the element or its plug-in socket
This is the cheapest and most common. Coil elements burn out from age. You may see a blister, a break, or a scorched spot on the coil. The receptacle it plugs into can also char, especially if something boiled over and cooked into the contacts. Humid island air speeds up corrosion on those metal terminals, so we see pitted sockets often. A burnt socket looks brown or black at the holes. Replacing a coil is straightforward. Replacing the socket takes a little more work but is still a routine job. On smooth tops, the radiant element under the glass fails the same way, just out of sight.
Cause family two: the infinite switch or control board
The knob you turn is an infinite switch. It cycles power on and off to set the heat level. When it wears out, the element may never heat, heat only on high, or cycle strangely. If the indicator light comes on but the burner stays cold, suspect the switch. On newer cooktops with touch controls, a relay on the control board does the same job. Failed relays often affect one burner while the rest work fine. Salt air can corrode board contacts over time in homes near the water. Both parts are behind panels, so this is where the job stops being a homeowner task.
Cause family three: power supply and wiring
An electric cooktop uses two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg and you get odd behavior: some burners work, others don't, or the oven bakes but won't broil. A tripped or half-tripped breaker does this. So does a loose wire at the terminal block. If multiple burners quit at the same time, check your breaker panel first. Flip the cooktop breaker fully off, then back on. If it trips again, stop and call. Repeated tripping means something is shorted, and that needs a meter, not another try. Loose or heat-damaged wiring at the appliance connection is a real fire risk and belongs to a technician or electrician.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe: look at the coil for breaks or blisters. Unplug a cool coil element and reseat it firmly. Swap a suspect coil with a same-size one from another burner; if the problem moves, the element is bad. Check the breaker. Look for spilled food baked into the socket. Stop there. Do not open panels, and do not poke at wiring. We come out with a meter, test the element for continuity, check both legs of incoming power, and test the switch under load. We also inspect terminals for corrosion, which is common in coastal homes. Parts often ship in from the mainland, so we identify the exact part number on the first visit. Call us.
Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating — quick answers
Can I keep using the other burners while one is dead?
Usually yes, if nothing smells burnt, no breaker is tripping, and you see no scorching. If you notice arcing, a burning smell, or repeated breaker trips, shut the cooktop breaker off and call us.
Why does my element glow, then shut off after a few minutes?
That's often normal cycling on lower settings. If it happens on high, the infinite switch or a thermal limiter may be failing. A burner that never returns to heat needs testing with a meter.
How long do parts take to arrive in Hawaii?
Common coils and sockets we often have on hand. Control boards and specialty smooth-top elements usually ship from the mainland, so plan on some waiting time. We give you an update as soon as we confirm the part.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the sound
Call us or fill in the form. Describe what you hear, smell, or see. Puddle under the washer? Clicking from the fridge? Small details help us load the right parts before we drive out.
- Step 2
We look it over
Our tech opens the machine and tests the real cause, not the guess. Salt-eaten terminals and humid control boards hide well. You hear exactly what failed and which repair options make sense.
- Step 3
Fixed or scheduled
Many repairs finish the same visit from parts on the van. When something must ship in from the mainland, we tell you straight, order it, and keep you posted until it lands.

Questions worth asking any repair company
Ask these of anyone you let into your home — us included. Call and we'll answer all five before you book anything.
- 1Ask for their license numberThen verify it with your state licensing board rather than taking it on trust.
- 2Ask for proof of insuranceLiability cover protects you if something goes wrong in your home.
- 3Get the quote in writingIncluding the trip fee, whether it's credited against the repair, and parts.
- 4Ask how they handle callbacksIf the same fault returns, what happens? Get the answer before work begins.
- 5Check their own reviewsLook the business up independently — their Google profile, not just what they tell you.
Why homeowners call us
- Built for salt airCoastal homes chew through appliances. We check for corroded connectors, rusted brackets, and moisture in control boards, because a fixed symptom means little if the salt keeps eating the same part next season.
- Humidity knows-howDamp trade wind air makes dryers work harder and vents clog faster. We clear airflow paths, test moisture sensors, and explain small habits that keep your laundry room from fighting the weather.
- Straight talk on partsShipping across the Pacific takes time. We say so up front instead of vanishing. You get realistic timing, a clear plan while you wait, and honest advice when a machine is not worth the wait.
- Independent and localWe are an independent repair company working on all major brands. No sales pitch for a new unit. Neighbors talking to neighbors, in plain words, about the machine in your kitchen right now.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more — as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersIf it isn't worth repairing, we'll say so — often on the phone.
