An Appliance Keeps Tripping the Breaker

Do these things first, in order
1. Unplug the appliance that was running when the breaker tripped. If it's hardwired, leave the breaker off. 2. Reset the breaker once, with the appliance unplugged. Push it firmly to OFF, then back to ON. 3. Watch what happens. If it holds with the appliance unplugged, the problem is the appliance and not the wiring. 4. Check whether other things on that circuit are also drawing power. A space heater or a second fridge on the same line adds up. 5. Look at the plug and cord. Melted prongs, brown scorch marks, or a warm outlet mean stop right there. 6. Sniff. A sharp burnt-plastic smell is a hard stop.
What not to do, even if you're in a hurry
Don't keep resetting. Each reset sends full current back into a fault, and that's how a warm wire becomes a hot one. Don't tape, wedge, or hold a breaker in the ON position. Ever. Don't swap in a bigger breaker to make the tripping stop. The breaker is sized to the wire behind the wall, and a larger one lets that wire overheat quietly. Don't open the electrical panel cover. Don't discharge anything inside an appliance either, because microwaves and some laundry machines store a charge even unplugged. Don't run the appliance on an extension cord to reach a different outlet. Salt-damp cords and high-draw machines are a bad mix. Don't ignore a GFCI that trips over and over near a sink or lanai.
When to stop and get out
Leave the house and call 911 if you see smoke, flame, or sparks coming from an outlet, cord, or the panel. Don't go back for the appliance. If you smell burning plastic or a hot-metal odor and can't find the source, shut off the main breaker if you can reach it safely, then step outside and call for help. Gas dryers and gas ranges: if you smell gas at any point, do not touch switches or the breaker. Leave, then call the gas utility from outside. If an outlet or wall plate feels hot to the touch, kill that circuit and leave it off. That's an electrician's call, not a reset.
Appliance problem or house problem?
Here's the simple test. With the appliance unplugged, does the breaker hold all day? Then the appliance has an internal short, or a failing motor, heating element, or pump. That's our lane. Does the breaker trip with nothing plugged in? That points at house wiring, a bad breaker, or moisture in a junction box. You want a licensed electrician. Whole neighborhood dark, or lights browning and surging? That's the utility. Call HECO or your island's provider. On older homes near the shoreline, corrosion inside outlets and appliance terminals is common. Green crust on prongs is a real clue, not cosmetic.

Can I use the appliance if it only trips sometimes?
No. Intermittent tripping usually means a short that opens and closes as parts heat, move, or get damp. It tends to get worse, not better. Keep it unplugged until someone inspects it.
Why does my dryer trip only when it heats?
The heating element likely has a break that's touching the housing. It draws normal current until it warms and shifts. Testing the element and thermostat sorts that out quickly.
Could humidity alone cause this?
It can. Moisture and salt build up on terminals, motor windings, and outlet contacts, which creates a path for current. Coastal homes see this more. Cleaning helps sometimes, though corroded parts need replacing.
