Dryer Runs But Never Gets Hot

What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer has two jobs: turn the drum, and make heat. If the drum still turns, your motor and belt are doing their part. That leaves the heating side and the airflow side, and those two are tied together. A dryer needs moving air to carry heat out of the drum and into the vent. When air stops moving, safety parts shut the heat off on purpose. So a no-heat dryer is very often a no-airflow dryer. Good news, really. The cheap causes sit at the top of our list, not the bottom.
Cause one: blocked airflow, inside and out
Start with lint, and not just the screen. The whole path. In Hawaii, damp lint packs into the duct like felt and won't shake loose. Add salt air and you get vent flaps corroded part-way shut, plus gecko nests and dust in the outside hood. When exhaust can't get out, heat backs up, and a thermal fuse or limit switch cuts power to the heater to protect the machine. The drum keeps spinning because the motor runs on a separate circuit. That's why folks tell us "it sounds fine, it just doesn't dry." Long flexible ducts with sharp bends behind the machine make all of this worse.
Cause two: a tripped safety part or half the power
Electric dryers run on two legs of 240-volt power. Lose one leg at the breaker and the drum still turns on 120 volts while the heater sits dead. A breaker can look on and still be partly tripped. Thermal fuses and high-limit thermostats are one-time or resetting parts that open when the machine overheats, and that overheating usually traces back to the blocked vent. Replace them without clearing the blockage and you'll be right back here in a few weeks. Gas dryers do their own version of this: an igniter or flame sensor quits while the drum motor and blower keep humming along.
Cause three: worn heating parts and controls
Heating elements burn open with age. The coil breaks, the circuit opens, no heat. Gas valve coils weaken and stop pulling the valve open, so the igniter glows, fades, and nothing lights. Cycling thermostats drift out of range. On newer machines, a control board or moisture sensor can end the cycle early or never call for heat at all, which looks identical from the doorway. Parts are where island life bites. Some ship the same week, some sit on a boat. We tell you which one you're dealing with before you plan your laundry around it.
Safe checks you can do right now
Clean the lint screen and run water through it. If water pools instead of passing through, softener residue has sealed the mesh. Then go outside and watch the vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel steady warm air, and weak flow points straight at a blockage. Pull the dryer out a bit and look at the flex duct for crushes or kinks. Flip your breaker fully off, then back on. Try a smaller load, because overstuffing kills airflow. That's the whole list. Skip anything that means removing panels, touching gas connections, or testing wires. Can I keep using the dryer with no heat?
You can run it, but you're burning power and time for nothing. If a blocked vent is the cause, running it keeps cooking internal parts. Better to stop, check the airflow at the outside hood, and get it looked at.

Safety thermostats can open all at once, the moment lint buildup crosses a threshold. Nothing looked different, but airflow finally dropped too far. A partly tripped breaker does the same thing overnight with no warning at all.
Does salt air really affect a dryer inside the house?
Yes. Salt-laden humid air moves through the vent and corrodes terminals, vent flaps, and metal ducting. On homes near the water we find pitted connectors and stuck exterior hoods regularly.
