What "two cycles" is really telling you
A dryer works by pushing hot air through the clothes and shoving the wet air outside. Heat is half the job, airflow is the rest. When the vent is blocked the heat still comes on, but the moisture just sits in the drum. Clothes come out hot and damp. The cabinet feels hotter than it should. Cycles run long, or the dryer shuts off early on a thermal limit. If one load used to take one cycle and now takes two, think airflow before anything else. Heating parts tend to quit all at once, not slowly over months.
Cause one: lint and a clogged vent line
Start with the cheapest and most common cause. Lint packs into the screen, the trap housing, the flexible hose behind the dryer, and the duct that runs through the wall. Salt air near the shore gums up the outside vent flap so it never opens all the way. Geckos, birds, and mud daubers like to nest in exterior hoods. A long duct run with several elbows loads up with lint faster, and a crushed foil hose behind a dryer shoved tight to the wall is another classic. Clear the whole line, not just the screen, and a big share of long dry times goes away.
Cause two: the exhaust path or install itself
Sometimes the vent is clean and the design is the problem. A duct that runs too far, sags between joists, or dumps into a crawlspace is never going to breathe. Screened exterior covers catch lint on purpose, then plug solid. A dryer in a closet with the louvered door shut cannot pull fresh air in, so it has nothing to push wet air out with. Rigid metal duct moves air better than the flexible stuff. In our humidity, venting into a garage or under the house just sends that moisture back into the room and back into your clothes.
Cause three: heat, sensors, and worn internals
When airflow really does check out fine, we open it up. A weak heating element, or one failed leg of power, gives you warm air that never gets hot. A thermostat or thermal fuse tripping early kills the heat mid-cycle. Moisture sensor bars glazed over with fabric softener film tell the dryer the load is dry when it isn't. A worn drum seal or belt lets air slide past the clothes instead of through them. Salt-corroded terminals and rusted blower housings show up a lot in island homes. Blower wheels crack and slip on the shaft, so the motor hums along while air barely moves. All of that means panels off, so leave it to a tech.
Safe checks you can do right now, and where we take over
Pull the lint screen and hold it under running water. If the water pools instead of passing through, scrub it with dish soap. Then go look at the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel strong warm air and see the flap swing open. Slide the dryer out a few inches so the hose isn't crushed, and prop the laundry closet door open. Run a load of towels by themselves.
