What "two cycles" is really telling you
A dryer dries by moving hot air through clothes and pushing wet air outside. Heat is only half the job. Airflow is the other half. When the vent is blocked, the heat still comes on, but the moisture stays in the drum. Clothes come out hot and damp. The cabinet feels hotter than usual. Cycles run long or shut off early on a thermal limit. If your dryer used to finish one load in one cycle and now needs two, think airflow first. Heating parts usually fail all at once, not slowly over months.
Cause one: lint and a clogged vent line
Start with the cheapest and most common cause. Lint builds in the screen, the lint trap housing, the flexible hose behind the dryer, and the duct running through the wall. Salt air near the shore makes the outside vent flap sticky, so it does not open all the way. Geckos, birds, and mud daubers nest in exterior hoods too. A long duct run with several elbows collects lint faster. Crushed foil hose behind a dryer pushed tight to the wall is another classic. Clearing the whole line, not just the screen, fixes a big share of long dry times.
Cause two: the exhaust path or install itself
Sometimes the vent is clean but the design is wrong. A duct that runs too far, sags between joists, or dumps into a crawlspace will never breathe well. Screened exterior covers trap lint on purpose and plug up. If your dryer sits in a closet with a louvered door closed, it cannot pull fresh air in, so it cannot push wet air out. Rigid metal duct moves air better than the flexible kind. In our humidity, venting into a garage or under the house just recycles moisture back into the room and back into your clothes.
Cause three: heat, sensors, and worn internals
If airflow is genuinely good, we look inside. A weak heating element or one failed leg of power can cause warm-but-not-hot air. A thermostat or thermal fuse that trips early stops heat mid-cycle. Moisture sensor bars coated in fabric softener film make the dryer think clothes are dry, then not. A worn drum seal or belt lets air bypass the load. Salt-corroded terminals and rusted blower housings are common in island homes. Blower wheels crack and slip on the shaft, so the motor spins but air barely moves. These checks need panels off. Leave them to a tech.

Pull the lint screen and hold it under running water. If water pools instead of passing through, scrub it with dish soap. Peek at the outside vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel strong warm air and see the flap open. Slide the dryer out a few inches so the hose is not crushed. Open the laundry closet door. Run a load of towels with nothing else.
