Start with the age of the machine
Age matters, but not the way most folks assume. A washer under about six years old is usually worth repairing, since parts are still being made and the rest of the machine likely has plenty of life left. Past ten or twelve years we look harder. Bearings, seals, and drum suspension tend to wear around the same time, so fixing one thing can uncover the next. Salt air adds a wrinkle here in Hawaii. Cabinets, hinges, and screws corrode faster near the water than they do inland, so we check for rust bloom around the base and back panel before we say anything about lifespan.
The type of fault tells you more than the age
Some failures are simple and satisfying to fix. A clogged drain pump, a worn door seal, a bad lid switch, a broken water inlet valve, a snapped drive belt. Those are routine, and the machine usually goes back to normal service. Other failures sit deeper. A failed drum bearing means splitting the tub. A cracked outer tub or a rusted-through spider arm on a front loader is structural. A burned main control board on an older machine can be replaced, but if that machine is already showing other wear, it's worth pausing.
