What scale actually does inside your machines
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. When the water heats or evaporates, those minerals stay behind as a chalky crust. In a water heater that crust settles on the bottom and acts like a blanket, so the element works harder and you get less hot water. In a dishwasher it coats the heating element, the spray arm holes, and the little screens. In a washer it stiffens fabric and plugs the inlet valve screens. None of this fails overnight. It creeps. Then one day the dishes come out gritty and the machine sounds like it's straining. Add humid salt air on the outside and metal parts get squeezed from both directions.
The one habit that prevents most of it
Run an acid rinse through anything that heats water. Plain white vinegar works, or a citric acid descaler sold for appliances. Dishwasher: empty it, set two cups of vinegar in a bowl on the top rack, run the hottest cycle with no detergent. Washer: run the clean cycle or a hot empty cycle with vinegar or a washer tablet, then wipe the door gasket dry. While you're in there, pull the dishwasher filter out of the tub floor, rinse it under the tap, put it back. No tools, no panels. That five-minute habit takes the film off before it hardens into rock.
How often to do it here
On most island water, once a month for the dishwasher and once a month for the washing machine is a fair rhythm. If your glasses cloud up sooner than that, go to every three weeks. Ice makers need attention too. Dump the bin every few weeks so old cubes don't shrink and fuse into one lump, and run the recommended cleaning routine a couple of times a year. Water heaters want a flush about once a year. If you're not comfortable with the drain valve and a hose, call a plumber or call us. Coffee makers and kettles get descaled monthly. Set a phone reminder for the first of the month and knock them all out at once.
Signs prevention time has passed
Watch for grit or a sandy residue you can feel on clean dishes. If the dishwasher runs a full cycle and the load comes out cool and wet, that usually points to a scaled heating element. Your water heater pops, rumbles, or knocks when it fires, and hot water runs out faster than it used to. The washer takes forever to fill, or the fill sounds thin and weak, which is generally the inlet screens choking. Ice cubes come out small, hollow, or cloudy with a mineral taste. Once you're there, a vinegar cycle won't reach it. Parts have to come out to be cleaned or replaced, and some of those parts ship in to the islands. Call early.

Will a water softener fix this?
A softener cuts scale buildup through the whole house, water heater and dishwasher included. It's a plumbing project, though, not an appliance repair. Even with one in, keep rinsing the dishwasher filter and wiping the washer gasket.
Is vinegar safe for my dishwasher?
Occasional use in a bowl on the top rack is generally fine and pretty common. Don't pour it into the detergent cup and don't mix it with bleach. If you're unsure about your rubber seals, check the owner's manual.
Can hard water damage cause a leak?
Indirectly, yes. Mineral buildup on seals and valve seats keeps them from closing all the way, so you get drips or slow seepage. If you see water under the machine, unplug it if that's safe to do and call us.
