Salt gets in whether you live mauka or makai. It rides the wind, settles on metal, then pulls moisture out of the air onto that metal, and rust starts. We find it on dryer drum edges, washer cabinet bottoms, fridge condenser coils, and the screws holding all of it together. Coastal homes see it sooner, but trade winds carry salt inland too. Wipe outside surfaces with a damp cloth and dry them after. Keep a few inches of air behind the fridge. A hinge that squeals or a door that starts to sag is corrosion at work, not just age.
Kona weather and humid stretches: mold, smells, and long dry times
When the trades stop and the air goes thick, your dryer has nothing dry to work with, so loads take longer. Damp lint sticks, and it packs into the vent hose. That's when the phone rings about dryers running hot and shutting off mid-cycle. Washers act up in the same weather. Front-load door gaskets stay wet and grow black mold down in the fold, and dishwashers hold onto smells. Before a humid stretch, pull the lint screen and rinse it, go outside and make sure the vent flap actually swings open, and leave the washer and dishwasher doors ajar between loads.
Summer heat: refrigerators and freezers work overtime
Late summer is our busiest window for cooling calls. Kitchen air is warmer, the door opens more, and the compressor barely gets a break. A fridge with dusty coils and a tired door seal starts losing that fight. Watch for ice cream going soft, milk turning early, a unit that hums nonstop, water pooling under the crisper. Do this before summer gets here. Vacuum the coils behind or beneath the unit. Close the door on a strip of paper as thin as a dollar bill and pull. If it slides out easy with no drag, the seal needs attention.
Winter rain, power blips, and the parts wait
Heavy rain months bring two problems. First, flickers and outages that hit control boards. A fridge or washer that came back dead after a storm often has a board or start relay gone bad, and a surge protector on the fridge is cheap insurance. Second, water. Look under the sink and behind the washer for damp cabinet floors and green crust on valve fittings. Then plan ahead, because parts ship here and some take a while. A short pre-season checklist you can run in ten minutes
Do this twice a year, spring and fall. Pull the dryer lint screen and hold it up to the light, then run water on it; if it beads instead of passing through, scrub it. Feel along the vent hose for kinks. Wipe the washer door gasket dry and look down in the fold. Clean the dishwasher filter basket. Vacuum the fridge coils and wash the door seal with warm soapy water. Check the back of every machine for rust bloom or a wet spot. Listen for grinding, clicking, water hammer. Write down what you found and the date. That list saves us both time on the phone.
