The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean
If your dishes come out gritty and the dishwasher smells when you open it, start by pulling the filter out of the tub floor and rinsing it. Cleaner tablets won't touch a packed filter. Most homeowners don't know that piece lifts out at all. Here's what happens when it sits for months, and the two-minute habit that keeps it from getting there.

What a clogged filter quietly does over time
Food bits collect in the filter basket, and water still drains, so nothing seems wrong at first. But the pump is now pushing dirty water back over your dishes. That's the grit you feel on glasses. Trapped food starts breaking down and the smell follows. In our humidity, that happens fast, and a week away from the house is enough. Over months the buildup packs down hard and starts pushing debris toward the drain hose and pump housing. What began as a rinse job turns into a drain problem. The heater and spray arms work harder against dirty water too.
The two-minute habit that prevents all of it
Open the door and pull out the bottom rack. You'll see a round cylinder in the floor of the tub, usually marked with an arrow or an unlock symbol. Twist it counterclockwise and lift it straight up. Under it there's a flat mesh screen that also lifts out on most models. Rinse both under warm tap water and use a soft dish brush on the mesh. No steel wool, no bleach. Drop them back in and twist the cylinder until it locks. That's it. If the parts don't move easily, check your manual and never force them. Wipe the door gasket while you're down there.
How often, honestly
Once a month covers most households. If you scrape plates and skip pre-rinsing, make it every two weeks. Big family, lots of rice and sticky food? Every two weeks too. Homes near the water get another problem. Salt air and hard water leave a white film on the mesh that slows drainage even when the filter looks clean, and a vinegar soak in a bowl for twenty minutes loosens it. Put a reminder in your phone on the first of the month. That one habit prevents more dishwasher service calls than anything else we see in island homes.
Warning signs prevention won't fix anymore
Standing water in the tub bottom after a finished cycle means the drain path is involved, not just the filter. Same with a gurgling sound at the sink while the dishwasher drains. If dishes on the top rack come out dry and dirty, the spray arms may be plugged or the pump is weak. A sour smell that comes back within a day of cleaning points to debris past the filter. Error codes about draining are another. At that point rinsing won't help, because the blockage is downstream. Stop running loads so you don't push it further, and give us a call.
When to call us instead of guessing
We handle all major brands as an independent shop. If the filter is clean and the problem stays, the next steps involve the pump, drain hose, or the control board, and that isn't homeowner territory. One island reality worth knowing up front: some dishwasher parts ship from the mainland, so a repair may take a few days between the diagnosis and the fix. We tell you that when we know it, not after. Bring us the details when you call. What the cycle does, what you hear, whether water sits. That helps us show up with the right parts the first trip. Reach us.
The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean — straight answers
Do all dishwashers have a removable filter?
Most made in the last fifteen years do. Older models often had a hard food grinder instead, with no filter to pull. Look at the tub floor for a twist cylinder, or check the cleaning section of your manual.
Can I run the filter through the dishwasher itself?
No. It has to come out of the machine and get rinsed under running water. The mesh traps grease that only direct water pressure and a soft brush will lift off.
Why does my dishwasher smell even after cleaning the filter?
Check the door gasket and the edge under the door for trapped food. If the smell comes back within a day, debris may be sitting in the drain hose or pump area. That one needs a look inside.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the sound
Call us or fill in the form and describe what you hear, smell, or see. Puddle under the washer? Clicking from the fridge? Small details help us load the right parts before we drive out.
- Step 2
We look it over
Our tech opens the machine and tests for the real cause instead of guessing. Salt-eaten terminals and humid control boards hide well. You hear exactly what failed and which repair options make sense.
- Step 3
Fixed or scheduled
Many repairs finish on the same visit with parts off the van. When something has to ship in from the mainland, we tell you straight, order it, and keep you posted until it lands.

Why homeowners call us
- Built for salt airCoastal homes chew through appliances. We check for corroded connectors, rusted brackets, and moisture sitting in control boards, because fixing the symptom means little if salt keeps eating the same part next season.
- Humidity knows-howDamp trade wind air makes dryers work harder and vents clog faster. We clear the airflow path and test moisture sensors, then explain the small habits that keep your laundry room from fighting the weather.
- Straight talk on partsShipping across the Pacific takes time, and we say so up front instead of vanishing. You get realistic timing and a plan for the wait. If a machine isn't worth waiting for, we'll tell you that too.
- Independent and localWe are an independent repair company and we work on all major brands. No sales pitch for a new unit. Neighbors talking to neighbors, in plain words, about the machine sitting in your kitchen right now.
- All major brands, gas & electricWhirlpool, Samsung, LG, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and more, as an independent repair company.
- Straight answersWhen a repair doesn't make sense, we tell you, sometimes before we even roll a truck.
