What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A microwave has two jobs. One is the show: light, fan, plate spinning, timer counting down. The other is cooking, handled by a high-voltage circuit that feeds the magnetron. When the show works but food stays cold, the control board is talking and the motor circuits are alive, while the cooking circuit is not. That narrows things a lot. It also means the failure sits behind a metal panel with parts that hold a dangerous charge even after you unplug it, so the diagnosis stops being a homeowner job very quickly. Good news is that the symptom is specific, so guessing is rarely needed. "Cold but running" has a short list of suspects.
The usual suspects, cheapest first
Start with the door switches. Microwaves use several of them. If one tells the board the door is shut and another says it is open, the unit runs and refuses to cook. Cheap part, common failure. Next is a blown thermal fuse or thermal cutout, often tripped by a blocked vent or a run with nothing inside. Then the high-voltage components, diode and capacitor. A failed diode is a classic no-heat cause. Last is the magnetron itself, the part that makes the microwaves. Here on the islands, salt air and kitchen humidity speed up corrosion on terminals and connectors, so a bad contact sometimes mimics a dead part.
Safe checks you can do right now
Unplug the unit for a minute, plug it back in, and try again, because boards do lock up. Then test properly: one cup of tap water in plain glass, two minutes on high. Feel the cup, not the water surface. If it warms slightly, your unit may be weak rather than dead. Open and close the door firmly and look for a bent latch, a sagging hinge, or food gunk in the latch slots. Wipe the door edge and frame clean. Check that the vents front and rear are clear, and confirm the outlet works with something else. Stop there. Do not remove panels or poke inside.
Why a weak microwave is different from a dead one
Some units still heat, just badly. Popcorn half pops and leftovers stay cool in the middle. That usually means a magnetron losing output, or a high-voltage part drifting out of spec, not a switch. It can also be simple crowding: a full plate, a cold dish straight from the fridge, or a stack of containers. Try one item at a time and stir halfway through. If a single cup of water barely warms after two minutes, the cooking circuit is fading. Weak units tend to get worse. Worth noting for over-the-range models, because a failing one can also run hot and trip a thermal cutout.

Is it safe to keep using a microwave that runs but does not heat?
It will not cook your food, so there is little point. If you smell burning, see scorch marks inside, or hear buzzing, stop and unplug it. Otherwise it is mostly useless rather than dangerous.
Could it just be the door switch?
Often, yes. A worn door switch is one of the most common no-heat causes. It is a small part, but reaching it means opening the cabinet near the capacitor, so leave that to a technician.
