Age matters, but not the way you think
A chest freezer from twenty years ago can still be a solid machine. They were built simple: fewer boards, fewer sensors, more metal. If the sealed system is sound, a bad thermostat or lid gasket is worth fixing on an older unit. Newer frost-free uprights are a different story. They have defrost boards, inverter compressors, control panels. Those parts do fail, and here in the islands they can take a while to arrive by boat. So we ask two things. How healthy is the cooling side, and is the failed part still made? Age alone doesn't decide it.
Faults we fix often
Door and lid gaskets top the list. Salt air and humidity chew on them, and a gasket that no longer seals means constant frost and a compressor that never rests. Defrost heaters and defrost thermostats fail regularly on frost-free uprights, and the giveaway is a thick ice wall behind the back panel. Thermostats and control boards that lose their setting show up a lot too. Evaporator fan motors squeal, then quit, and the freezer warms from the top down. Start relays and overload devices fail and leave the unit humming or clicking. All normal, repairable work.
Faults that usually mean replacement
A leak in the sealed refrigerant system is the hard one. Oil stains, a compressor that runs nonstop but stays warm, or coils that never frost at all can point there. On a small freezer, that repair rarely makes sense. Rust that has eaten through the cabinet or the inner liner is the other one. Once the insulation gets wet, it stays wet, and the unit sweats forever. That happens near the shoreline more than people expect. A seized compressor on an older model belongs in the same group. We'll tell you plainly when we see one.
How we think it through in your garage
We start with the simple stuff. Is it getting power, is the lid sealing, are the coils packed with dust and lint. Then we listen. A compressor that hums and stops sounds nothing like one running smoothly. We check temperatures at the evaporator and in the cabinet to see whether it's a cooling problem or an airflow problem. Once we know the failed part, we check whether it's available and how long shipping to the islands will take. Then we lay out the options and you decide. No pressure either way, and no work starts before you say go.
Safe checks you can do before we come
Close the lid on a dollar bill or a sheet of paper. If it slides out easily, the gasket is tired. Look for frost building in one spot instead of evenly. Feel whether the back or sides are hot to the touch, which can mean poor air clearance. Pull the unit out a few inches from the wall. Check the outlet with a lamp, and check your breaker. If you have a chest model, make sure the drain isn't blocked. Stop there. Don't pull back panels or interior covers. Then call us and tell us what you found.
